Opinion: Keeping It Real By Keeping It Small

Everybody must surely have a fantasy version of what the perfect stand-up comedy gig would be. This is mine. A smart, funny comedian sets up shop in London somewhere. A small club, where instead of doing a one-night stand they can settle into a relaxed run and play regularly to appreciative audiences.

News: Alternative Comedy Experience New Series/DVD

The second series of Comedy Central's Alternative Comedy Experience is due to start in February 2014 but before then a DVD of the first series is to be released on November 18. This is the same day many of the big name live DVDs, including those from Adam Hills and Sean Lock, are released.

News: Amused Moose Laughter Award 2013

The third Amused Moose Laughter Awards, supported by 2entertain, launches today. The London club will be searching for the best show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the winner will receive £5000 towards the development of their comedy career, a commercial standard promotional DVD filmed at the Soho Theatre, a potential DVD deal, extensive promotional and development opportunities and a trophy.

I'm currently at the Cat Laughs Comedy Festival in Kilkenny, which is now in its 19th year. This year's new sponsor is Sky, but apart from the ubiquitous Sky banners and numerous broadband/TV adverts dotted around the small city not a lot has changed since I first came here over ten years ago.

Opinion: The Chortle Awards – Safe But Sound

When the fifth Chortle Award winner was announced last night and Pappy's won best Character or Sketch Act I received a sharp nudge in the ribs from my partner as she said "you know the results already don't you." I explained that I had been on the panel that chose the nominees, so they were educated, informed guesses, but the winners were chosen by readers of Chortle so ultimately any nominated name could have come out of Chortlemeister Steve Bennett's hat.

You won't see much of Stewart Lee in his latest TV series starting on February 5. He is executive producer/curator of Comedy Central's The Alternative Comedy Experience and only crops up briefly interviewing the acts between their appearances.
