Last week when the end of the year round-ups were being bandied around Reece Shearsmith bemoaned the fact that Inside No 9 was being forgotten because it went out way back at the start of the year. Will Steve Delaney, the creator of glorious comedy dimwit and ham actor Count Arthur Strong, be similarly bypassed at the end of 2015? I sincerely hope not.
As comedy goes it could not have been more meta if Stewart Lee had made a cameo appearance. Just when we thought we’d seen the last of him Dapper Laughs released a new video on YouTube on Christmas Day in which he returned to earth from a buxom wench-filled heaven and put his creator, Daniel O’Reilly in his place for attempting to kill him off by donning an existentialist’s black polo neck and appearing on Newsnight.
The nominations have been announced for the inaugural Midlands Comedy Awards. Every major comedy promoter in the Midlands was asked to nominate their favourite comedians and comedy clubs in seven categories for the awards, which are organised by comedian Jay Islaam and Pod Comedy. Islaam received responses from 25 different promoters of live comedy and their opinions have decided the shortlist for 2014.

House of Fools, penned by and starring Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer, is one of three shows on the shortlist for Best Situation Comedy in the Writers Guild Awards, announced today. The other two nominees are Up The Women, written by Jessica Hynes and Him & Her, written by Stefan Golaszewski.
Mark Thomas is pretty much a comedy legend. He’s been around for three decades and is as busy and vital as ever. And unpredictable. Just as you think you have him pigeonholed as a satirist he goes and does a brilliant personal show such as Bravo Figaro! This year he is back with Cuckooed, a show about betrayal that is both personal and political.
James Woroniecki is the Director of the 99 Club, which runs Comedy Clubs across London and has been awarded Best London Club at the Chortle Awards for the last four years running. He has an enviable record of nurturing new talent as well as playing host to some of the biggest names in comedy such as Jack Whitehall and Russell Howard.

It’s a good week for charity gigs and a good week for Daniel Kitson fans too. Kitson’s most recent theatre piece, Analog.Ue, had good reviews but not the usual ecstatic reviews last year. Maybe some people were wishing they could see him at his stand-up best.
When you see a lot of comedy gigs like I do something that is a bit different usually has a head start. And Soiree in a Cemetery was very different. Ticket-holders only discovered the location of this one-off in the afternoon, which meant that excitement was building up even before arriving. There was a bit of anxiety about the weather as autumn had decided to chip in, but the rain stopped, the sky cleared and, as long as you were well-insulated by overcoats and alcohol a good time was had by all.
