Opinion: Close Encounters With Joan Rivers

Every comedy journalist will have their own memories of Joan Rivers. Here are a couple of mine.  I had an insight into her real personality behind the bulletproof onstage confidence when I watched the acclaimed 2010 documentary about her life, A Piece Of Work. Part of the fly-on-the-wall doc followed her as she performed her one-woman play in London at the Leicester Square Theatre, A Work in Progress By a Life in Progress. After the press performance she was filmed reading her reviews in the back of a car.

Opinion: Ricky Gervais and Truth In Comedy

If we have learnt one thing this week it is that it doesn’t matter what you do, if you put something on your computer the chances are people will see it even if you delete it. Ricky Gervais has been in trouble for tweeting about famous people’s nude pictures being leaked, writing “Celebrities, make it harder for hackers to get nude pics of you from your computer by not putting nude pics of yourself on your computer.”

Free Books!!

Beyond The Joke HQ has been having a post-Fringe clear-out and has come across a previously undiscovered box containing pristine copies of Beyond A Joke, the book that helped to inspire this website. The Sunday Times called the book "an intriguing history of humour's bad boys that claims that almost every great comedian is a damaged soul ...

Review: Edinburgh Round-Up

So many comedians, so little time. I nippped away on a small break after the Fringe and took my notebook with me. I did some adding up the other night. I saw nearly 100 shows in three weeks and reviewed 12 shows for the Evening Standard and 21 shows for Beyond The Joke. And no, I'm not a lazy arse, don't forget I also had to see all of those shows and eat. And write news stories and contentious opinion pieces.  It was an odd festival though.
