Review: BBC Original Comedy Shorts

With BBC3 due to become an online channel in 2015 I guess the BBC needs to get viewers used to going to iPlayer to watch original content online and not just last night’s episode of EastEnders. To nudge comedy fans in the right direction the Beeb invited a group of famous comedians to make a programme that they had always dreamt about making. The resulting six comedy shorts are pretty mixed, but the one thing one can definitely say about them is that they are very varied in tone. Some are surreal, some are discreetly political.

Opinion: Comedy Snobbery - The Sequel

At the risk of digging an even deeper hole for myself I'll try to respond below to Dave Twentyman's response to my original piece here.

Opinion: Comedy Snobbery

Comedian Dave Twentyman recently posted an interesting piece on Facebook about snobbery in the comedy industry towards comedians who play the weekend club circuit. Stand-ups who make their living from gigs at stag and hen parties and office parties etc are viewed, said Twentymen, as hack and unimaginative.

News: Micky Flanagan Postpones Shows

Micky Flanagan has announced that he is postponing the next four dates of his Back in the Game tour at the Brighton Centre and the O2 Arena in London following the death of his mother. Tickets will still be valid for the rescheduled dates in December, or refunds will be available if ticket-holders cannot attend. Details here.

After last week's frenetic activity on the London circuit this week there are only three gigs to catch and if you haven't got a ticket for the first one yet you might as well enjoy your night in.

TV Review: Was It Something I Said?, C4

Not sure if this new 'play at home via Twitter' show, hosted by David Mitchell, is the first interactive panel game, but even if it is it is still hard to tell it apart from all the other panel games on the box at the moment.

Opinion: Booze v Comedy

To the opening night of Micky Flanagan's London arena stint last night. Three nights at Wembley plus seven nights at the O2 Arena might not quite be a record but it wouldn't surprise me if the cockney comic broke the record for bar takings yesterday. The show started late because people were still buying drinks and during the interval - and I've never seen this before - one could not walk through the corridors because of endless multiple snaking queues of fans topping up before the second half.

Review: The Week Ahead May 20 - 26

With bands constantly reuniting maybe the next stage in the comedy-as-rock-and-roll phenomenon is for double acts to reunite. Not much chance of Baddiel and Newman getting back together though as both are currently gearing up for a full-on return to solo work after a break.
