June 2014

Preview: The Week Ahead June 9 - 15

Pretty spoilt for choice at the Soho Theatre this week. As well as Stewart Lee doing yet more work-in-progress shows, there are two very different shows opening on Tuesday. I haven't seen Tom Rosenthal do stand-up for a while now but I’ve seen plenty of him on television.

Edinburgh Fringe Preview: Rachel Parris

Previews are a chance for performers to try things out that may not make the final cut. They should not put pressure on performers. That’s why critics do not tend to be invited. Rachel Parris is doing her very first preview tonight at the Pleasance, so it hard to predict what state it will be in.

News: Russell Howard Gets More Good News

After eight hugely successful series on BBC Three, Russell Howard’s Good News is moving to BBC Two.

The show, in which Russell comments on the week’s news with a mix of stand-up, sketches and special guests, has enjoyed huge ratings and critical acclaim and has been a firm favourite with BBC Three viewers since it started in 2009.

News: Michael McIntyre Tour Announced

The UK’s number one comedian, Michael McIntyre is set to return to the stage in 2015 with his new UK & Ireland Arena tour, Happy & Glorious. Tickets go on sale to the general public at 9am on Friday, June 13.

Edinburgh Fringe Preview: Mark Watson

Mark Watson is either an Edinburgh Festival legend or an obsessive nutjob. Or maybe both. He is famous for his marathon shows lasting more than a day that have pushed his stand-up stamina to the absolute limit. He has also been involved in Fringe cult curiosities such as the quiz We Need Answers and the site specific piece The Hotel. But, lest we forget, Watson also does proper conventional shows with proper conventional jokes about the odd things that happen to him or the odd things that he sees at railways stations.

News: Tracy Morgan In Car Accident

Tracy Morgan, comedian and 30 Rock star, remains in a critical condition following a car accident in New Jersey early on Saturday. It has now been confirmed that comedian and writer James McNair, known as Jimmy Mack, was killed in the accident. Six other people were injured.

Reports says that a tractor-trailer struck the Mercedes limousine bus they were travelling in early Saturday morning on the New Jersey Turnpike. Six vehicles were involved in the crash.

Edinburgh Fringe Preview: Bridget Christie

As Edinburgh previews go, this one is pretty unmissable. To draw a topical analogy it’s a bit like Spain playing a pre-World Cup friendly, but with more laughs. Christie won the Foster’s Comedy Award in 2013 with A Bic For Her and follows it up this year with An Ungrateful Woman. Tonight's show at the Camden Head, however, is still very much a work-in-progress.

News: Jim Jefferies Extends UK Tour

Jim Jefferies has added a second show at the O2 Academy Brixton on July 31. This follows the announcement of a one-off at the same venue on August 1 which sold out in record time and a gig at the Manchester Apollo on August 2.

The controversial Australian comedian has recently been working in America where he starred in his own sitcom for the FX channel, entitled Legit, which ran for two series. Jefferies has also filmed two HBO hour comedy specials.

News: T In The Park Comedy Line-Up Announced

T in the Park has announced its line-up for The Stand Comedy Club, taking place in The Scottish Sun Big Top across the weekend of July 11 - 13.

Russell Kane is a multi-talented writer and performer who has firmly established himself as one of the best comics in the UK today, winning The Edinburgh Comedy Award and Australia's prestigious Barry Award. Currently touring the UK with his brand new live show “Smallness”, which poses the question “What is it with us and smallness?”

News: New TV Shows For Kevin Bridges

Live At The Commonwealth will see the Scottish comedian take to the stage at the Theatre Royal in Glasgow to host a very special live stand-up show to celebrate this summer’s games in Glasgow. Due to air on BBC One in July, Live At The Commonwealth will feature internationally renowned comedians from the Commonwealth.
