June 2014
Is it just me or do comedians seem to be doing more Edinburgh previews than ever this year? I’m sure there was a time when the Fringe was a more casual affair, where comedians honed their sets as much as they could in front of their mates or the mirror at home and then maybe did a few warm-ups in July. This year though, a number of comedians seem to have been gigging almost every night since May, which I guess is a reflection if how important the Edinburgh Fringe has become.
Tim Vine has announced his first stand-up tour in four years. The punslinger is back with new jokes, silly songs and – as if that weren’t enough – twitchy dancing. It’s a case of joke, joke, joke, prop, prop, prop, song, song, song. The tour starts in Bristol, aptly, on April Fool's Day, 2015 and finishes in Southend on June 12.
Bridget Christie will be touring the UK this Autumn with this year’s Edinburgh show An Ungrateful Woman, as well as her 2013 Foster's Edinburgh Comedy Award-winning show, A Bic For Her.
A new batch of BBC Comedy Feeds pilots, due to be released in July, have been announced today. All nine comedy pilots have been commissioned for iPlayer and BBC Three by Shane Allen, Controller BBC Comedy, Victoria Jaye, Head of TV Content for BBC iPlayer and Zai Bennett, former Controller BBC Three.
This year’s Comedy Feeds include:
I’ve been tipping Sara Pascoe for stardom for so long now if she doesn’t make it big soon it is going to start becoming embarrassing. Her show last year, mixing feminism with a sideways streak, was her best yet, but I felt it got shunted out of the way in the rush to champion eventual Foster’s Award winner Bridget Christie. Good lord, we can’t have two feminists on the shortlist can we? It took a while for Pascoe to find her voice.
Eddie Izzard is to play a one-off show at Croydon's Fairfield Halls to raise money for his favourite football club Crystal Palace. Izzard will be headlining a line-up that also includes Mark Steel and Holly Walsh. Kevin Hunter Day and Jim Piddock will be sharing compering duties. The show, entitled Stand Up For The Palace, takes place on Thursday, July 17. All proceeds from the event will go to the Crystal Palace Football Club Academy. Izzard became an Associate Director of the Premier League club in 2012.
Russell Brand is due to be one of the speakers at a major anti-cuts rally in Parliament Square on Saturday, June 21. This will follow a march from the BBC HQ in Portland Place.
The event is organised by The People’s Assembly, which is campaigning against austerity. There will also be speeches from Green Party MP Caroline Lucas and journalist Owen Jones. Stop the War, CND and other peace groups will form an anti-war and anti-Trident bloc on the demonstration.
Critics are constantly bemoaning the lack of cutting edge, hard-hitting political engagement on the comedy circuit these days. These must be the critics who don't get out much, or they would have come across the work of Josie Long, Tiernan Douieb and Chris Coltrane to name three. And then there is Matt Forde, who has crossed the metaphorical chamber as it were and gone from being a political advisor to the Labour Party to being a stand-up comedian.
The Big Wednesday Comedy Club in London is experimenting with offering a discount to those who are 'brave' enough to sit in the front. This is their solution to customers not wanting to be close to the comedians they have paid to come see. From June 25 they will offer a 50% discount for audience members booking front row seats in advance, making ticket prices £3.85.
I’m not even sure why Holly Walsh is bothering with the Edinburgh Fringe this year. If playing the Festival is all about being discovered it is too late for her. She has already established herself as a skilful practitioner of the deceptively tough art of telling a gag-packed story. And she has already fought her way into the male-dominated bastion of Mock the Week and been on Would I Lie To You? and Never Mind The Buzzcocks. I’m joking of course.
