TV Review: Russell Howard's Good News, BBC2

Russell Howard has always been a stand-up comedian with a positive view of the planet. No miserabilist angst for the boss-eyed Bristolian. So his enduring upbeat TV series looking at news around the globe has been a good fit for him. And fit is the word. For better or worse when the programme goes out these days there are as many people lusting after his guns as there are laughing at his gags.

News: Good News – Russell Howard Returns

It has been confirmed that Russell Howard will return to BBC2 on October 22 with a new series of Russell Howard's Good News. Having reached 3 million viewers a week and regularly been the most watched show on iPlayer, the award-winning show makes a welcome and highly anticipated return with a new nine-part run.

News: Russell Howard Conquers America Via The Internet

Russell Howard has announced more live dates of his Wonderbox show in America and Canada, thanks largely to his online presence.

Howard’s BBC3 show Russell Howard’s Good News had been widely pirated and in November 2014 a YouTube channel was set up so that fans around the world who cannot see the programme on TV can see it legitimately on the web. The channel has now had 9 million views - there are two viewers in North Korea, although Howard has no plans to tour there at the moment.

Opinion: Comedy Central Comedy: The Sequel

It’s the innocuous opinion pieces that seem to get me into the most hot water. Last Friday I wrote about the fact that Comedy Central UK was making a stand-up series fronted by Russell Howard, Russell Howard’s Stand Up Central, but was no longer making The Alternative Comedy Experience, the show curated by Stewart Lee.

Opinion: Russell Howard 1 Stewart Lee 0

A couple of years ago I interviewed Stewart Lee in Comedy Central UK’s offices off Oxford Street. He was promoting the Alternative Comedy Experience which was about to start and give airtime to comedians who didn’t fit into the shiny floored Live at the Apollo template such as Josie Long and Simon Munnery.

News: Russell Howard's Stand-Up Show Airs On Comedy Central

Russell Howard is set to host his first ever stand-up TV show on Comedy Central. The 10-part series, Russell Howard’s Stand-Up Central, will air in late April.

The series is filmed in front of a live audience at the Electric Ballroom in Camden, featuring performances from Howard, as well as two handpicked stand-up guests each episode.  In addition to performing new and exclusive material, Howard will respond to questions from viewers on social media and interact with members of the audience.

Opinion: Work-in-Progress – What Is It Worth?

I had an email yesterday from comedian Tiernan Douieb, telling me about the glittering line-up of the forthcoming Phoenix Fringe. The three-day laugh-in from February 20 includes the likes of Russell Howard, Hal Cruttenden and Katherine Ryan and tickets are around the £10 mark. Most of their tickets go for £8 in advance or a bargain £20 for 3 shows.

Review: Him & Her, BBC3

After a hectic week I had a pre-Xmas binge on Him & Her at the weekend, catching up with the fourth series on iPlayer. Having already seen the first episode it made sense to watch the final four back to back, movie-style, as they all took place on the same day in the same place – Paul and Laura were getting married, Becky (Sarah Solemani) was a bridesmaid and Steve (Russell Tovey) was best man.

Preview: The Week Ahead July 29 - Aug 3

Contrary to popular opinion not quite every comedian is migrating to Edinburgh this week. Russell Brand is in London trying out material for his Messiah Complex World Tour at the Soho Theatre from Wednesday. It will probably be a fairly rough incarnation of the finished show, but even a rough Brand is often more fun than a lot of polished stand-ups.

Review: Russell Howard's Good News, BBC3

Russell Howard's Good News can hardly be called one of TV's best kept secrets. It has regularly topped the BBC3 ratings and is one of the most viewed programmes on iPlayer. It was voted BBC3's Best Ever Show by Digital Spy and Howard was voted the number one Weird Crush by Heat Magazine earlier this year. Not sure if that last one is a compliment or not.
