Live at the Apollo returns to BBC1 tonight. This has left me feeling conflicted. On the one hand I love the fact that stand-up gets more exposure on television. On the other hand I hate the fact that stand-up gets more exposure on television. Now that's what I call conflicted.
The Brighton Comedy Festival is the first really notable festival after Edinburgh and brings a number of Fringe hits to the south coast this year, such as Bridget Christie and Sara Pascoe, alongside innovative new shows. This year's fun started in familiar style with the big guns from management company Off The Kerb helping to raise funds for local HIV charity Sussex Beacon.

Great show, shame about the critic. Henry Paker's set was one of those hours that put me in a difficult position. It is packed full of jokes, wry, offbeat observations and physical humour but somehow I walked out not feeling fully satisfied even though I'd watched most of the audience in fits of laughter.
I went to Russell Brand's work-in-progress show at the Soho Theatre last night. Really enjoyed it. Say what you like about Brand, he is always different. His use of language, his use of the space – poncing and pacing about – and even his interactions with the audience, frequently sexual, single him out as someone special.
I attended the annual breakfast briefing for the Foster's Edinburgh Comedy Awards yesterday. The good news – apart from the fact that the croissants were excellent – was that Foster's has confirmed that they are sponsoring the award for the next three years, which was maybe not a surprise as the award has been a great way of linking lager with laughs and I'm sure it has helped their sales figures. It can only be a matter of time before critics stop calling it the award formerly known as the Perrier Award.
I've had some particularly weird and varied gig-going this week. If you could draw a Venn Diagram I doubt if there is anybody else in London who has been to the same shows as me. Wednesday night was particularly odd. I don't think I've ever been to two more diametrically opposed events.
