This second series of Upstart Crow has felt a little under the radar. I'm not sure whether that is to do with the blink-and-you'll-miss-it 8.30pm scheduling or the fact that we are now not so pleasantly surprised by Ben Elton's Blackadder-ish turns of phrase as we were first time round. It's been good but it has not really blown me away.
Ben Elton’s eloquent defence of the mainstream sitcom last month was illuminating, fascinating and persuasive. And in a way maybe it could be seen by some as an incidental pre-emptive strike against critics who might have their hatchets sharpened for the new series of Upstart Crow, Elton’s popular sitcom about Shakespeare’s early years starring David Mitchell.
The Great British Bake Off featuring new co-presenters Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig starts on Channel 4 at 8pm on August 29.
Also appearing on the show are new cook Prue Leith and the only member of the BBC front-of-camera team to move to C4 - Paul Hollywood.

Fielding is also in the news due to an art gallery selling a photographic print of the comedian with a black face, a headband and a blond wig which has been described – not by Fielding – as a 'black Bjorn Borg'.

The transmission date has been confirmed for the new series of Taskmaster, co-hosted by Greg Davies and Alex Horne.
Series four of the award-winning comedy game show will start on Dave on Tuesday, April 25 at 9pm.
The contestants taking part will be Lolly Adefope, Hugh Dennis, Noel Fielding, Mel Giedroyc and Joe Lycett.
It has been announced that Noel Fielding will be part of the Great British Bake Off team when it starts on Channel 4.
Sandi Toksvig will also be a regular on the show alongside expert judges veteran cookery writer Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood.
Noel Fielding has spoken exclusively to Beyond The Joke about his role in the second series of Ben Elton's Shakespearean sitcom Upstart Crow.
Fielding recently finished filming his role as a glamorous Elizabethan musician who collaborates with Shakespeare on a comedy in the episode entitled Food of Love. "I play Thomas Morley, who writes popular madrigals! He is a kind of rock star of his day. It was great fun!"
Hugh Dennis, Joe Lycett, Lolly Adefope, Mel Giedroyc and Noel Fielding will compete to be crowned Taskmaster champion in series four of the hit show starring BAFTA-nominated Greg Davies and Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee Alex Horne. Series four and five of Taskmaster, 2015’s most watched commission on UKTV Play, are scheduled to air in 2017.

The Leicester band was playing the first of two sold out hometown gigs at the King Power Stadium in front of 27,000 fans to celebrate their local team's Premier League victory.
Fielding appeared onstage towards the end of the band's set wearing a large fake moustache and big coat to play the titular character in the song Vlad The Impaler. When he removed the coat he revealed a blue Leicester City shirt.
