Entry is now open for So You Think You're Funny? – the UK’s most prestigious comedy newcomer competition. The final is at the Gilded Balloon during the Edinburgh Fringe this summer.
If you think that you’ve got what it takes to become the next big name in comedy this is the competition for you. Previous contestants include Dylan Moran, Russell Howard, Jimmy Carr, Aisling Bea, Tommy Tiernan, Peter Kay, Nina Conti and Kevin Bridges.
Noel Fielding, Adam Buxton and Tim Key are among the acts due to play a four-day mini-festival later this month.
The shows will take place from February 15 - 20 at the Bush Theatre in West London, a small venue in Shepherds Bush better known for staging fringe theatre plays rather than comedy. The shows have been arranged by the management agency PBJ.
The full line-up of Comedy at the Bush is as follows:
Monday Feb 15: Rory Bremner & Mark Dolan
Wednesday Feb 17: Adam Buxton
Entries are now open for the English Comedian of the Year Competition 2016. The top three acts from ECOTY 2015, winner Brennan Reece (pictured, by Richard Davenport), Chris Turner and Alistair Barrie, are currently performing their solo shows alongside the Best of English Comedian of the Year package at Fringeworld in Adelaide. The best acts in the 2016 competition will get the chance to appear at the Adelaide and Perth Fringe Festivals in 2017.
UKTV has commissioned a second series of The Interviews for comedy channel Gold.
Each episode of this new six-part series follows the career and personal story of legendary celebrities from the world of comedy and showbiz, using their most memorable moments from British TV chat shows and beyond.
I see narrator Dave Lamb has broken cover and is appearing in front of ther cameras in Come Dine With Me's Champion of Champions run at the moment. I'm not so sure about the revised format, which feels like it is going for the civilised Masterchef audience when all we really want to see are the fights, but Lamb (that's him in the middle) is a reassuringly comic presence. Even if he does look a bit like a smiley Don Logan from Sexy Beast.
Smart stories? Check. Smart suit? Check. Household name? Why not? The eloquent, erudite Tom Allen has been on the cusp of breaking through for most of the decade and it finally looks as if he is having his moment. He has recently appeared on Live at the Apollo, 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown and The Great British Bake Off Extra Slice.
The results of the Comedy.co.uk Awards 2015 have been announced. The awards, now in their 10th year, are organised by The British Comedy Guide.
Eddie Izzard is reviving the One Word Impro Show that he was a part of twenty years ago for a special gig on February 12.
The show was originally performed at the Albery Theatre. This time the team of Izzard, Neil Mullarkey, Suki Webster and Stephen Frost will be performing in an early evening show at the Palace Theatre at 6pm. It is going to be a busy night for Izzard. Straight after the Impro show he will be performing his solo show at the same venue.
Can you be funny when it is daylight outside? It’s a challenge for comedy tents at festivals and yesterday it was a challenge for the New Acts of the Year competition, which kicked off at the ungodly hour of 2.30pm. But the line-up was strong and most of the performances committed. They were also being paid £75 each for their five minute sets, which maybe helped. As compere Arthur Smith pointed out £15 a minute is not a bad pay rate.
I missed the press night of this new play about comedian Marty Feldman so I booked a ticket for the next night. Then I made a fatal error. I read the reviews. This play had received such bad notices that I thought about checking with the venue to see if the run had already closed. I thought of that scene in The Producers where they have a sign saying Opening Night that switches to Closing Night as soon as the first disappointed audience leaves the theatre.
