News: Carla "Butterflies" Lane Dies

Sitcom writer Carla Lane has died. She was 87.

Lane had a number of hits over a lengthy career, including Bread (pictured), Butterflies and The Liver Birds.

She was also famous for her love of animals and was a passionate animal rights activist. For a while she ran an animal sanctuary in Sussex. 

News: Reece Shearsmith to Appear In West End Play

Reece Shearsmith is to appear onstage in London later this year.

He will co-star with Ken Stott in a new production of Ronald Harwood's play The Dresser, directed by Sean Foley.

News: Comic Legend Burt Kwouk Dies

Legendary actor Burt Kwouk has died. He was 85.

Kwouk was one of the most familiar faces on TV and film for more than fifty years. Some of his earliest high profile roles were in the James Bond classics Goldfinger and You Only Live Twice, but he found major cinematic fame as Cato in the Pink Panther films opposite Peter Sellers. He also popped up in the 1960s Bond send-up Casino Royale.

Review: Lady Dynamite, Netflix

I watched the first episode of Maria Bamford’s new sitcom Lady Dynamite over the weekend when I was bedridden with flu. I assumed I was delirious. In the space of around 30 minutes I watched something that addressed me directly through the screen, played with timelines and messed with the colour palette. At one point I was sure the lead character turned into a goat. Or maybe a sheep. I’m not kidding.

Earlier this week I reviewed David Baddiel’s show My Family: Not The Sitcom at the Menier Chocolate Factory for the Evening Standard. It’s excellent by the way. But before the show there was a question about who would review it.

TV Review: Going Forward, BBC4

So-called experts are always saying that the situation is crucial to the success of a situation comedy. So why is one sitcom about a subject a hit and not another? Back in the mists of time there was a BBC comedy about people who worked in a dreary office, but it didn’t take off. This wasn’t the Ricky Gervais classic, this was another desk-based series that pre-dated it, Nice Day At The Office. The script was good, it starred Tim Spall, but who remembers it? Just me.

News: Autumn Tour Extension for Russell Kane

Update 11/7: Russell Kane has added a major London date to his tour., He will be performing at the Eventim Apollo on Friday 31st March 2017. Tickets go on general sale at 10am on Friday 15th July, with a venue presale starting on Wednesday 13th July at 10am.
