Interview
Liz Miele's stand-up show Mind Over Melee is about her experiences as an anxiety-ridden American. She jokes about her struggles with her physical health, mental illness in her family, dating, travelling through Europe alone and coming to grips with getting older and being an adult, all with a skewed logic of an angry New Yorker trying to make sense of everything.
Doug Segal is a comedy mind reader and his latest show is designed to make you feel good with a mix of tricks that will make your brain boggle and jokes that will tickle your funny bone. Apparently the Evening Standard said of him: "Imagine if Derren Brown was funny’". I don't think it was me that said it, but maybe Segal got me to say it after casting a spell on me.
Tommy Tiernan really does need no introduction. He is a Perrier Award winner, he appeared in one of the greatest-ever episodes of Father Ted and, well, you should just go and see him, simple as that. He is bringing his powerhouse show Out of The Whirlwind to the Fringe this year. When I saw a version at the Soho Theatre it had everything – stories, gags, loud bits, quiet bits, angry bits, insightful bits, controversial bits, twinkly bits.
Former doctor Adam Kay will be performing Fingering A Minor on the Piano at the Soho Theatre from April 3 - 15. He will be playing comic songs and revealing the funny side of his medical career but, Jeremy Hunt take note, he will also be revealing a more serious side to his previous career as well.
Tickets here.
You may know the name of Juliette Burton from her outspoken comments about Protein World’s Beach Body Ready adverts last year. Burton tweeted an angry response to the London Underground ads and went viral.
Kate Berlant featured in Variety’s Ten Comics to Watch for 2015. She has also been named as one of Time Out LA’s Nine Comedians To Watch and as one of Comedy Central’s Top Ten Comics. She showcased her absurdist humour in her own episode of the hit Netflix show The Characters, recently wrapped a pilot for Comedy Central and can be seen on The Meltdown with Jonah & Kumail.
You could call Stephen K Amos a crowdpleaser without fear of a lawsuit dropping on your desk. He can get the most miserable of audience members laughing like a drain. It doesn’t matter how grim your day has been, going to a Stephen K Amos gig will cheer it up.
US comic Ron Funches is over in the UK for a short run. Maybe he doesn't have much time to tour because back in America he is increasingly in demand onscreen. He is a regular on NBC’s Undateable and appeared on The Conan O’Brien Show and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, while you may have heard his voice on Bojack Horseman, Bob’s Burgers and Home. He also has a voiceover in the upcoming Dreamworks animated film Trolls. Ron Funches is at Soho Theatre until June 18.
It is hard to believe there was a time when one liners and wordplay were not particularly popular. These days there are one liner comedians everywhere. There is even a UK Pun Championship. As far as iI know Milton Jones has never entered but then if he did there would be no point anybody else turning up. He is the undisputed master of the finely tuned quip, twisting language to hit a comedic bullseye every time. In longer shows it's clever stuff too, with callbacks and references, which mean that you have to pay attention.
Todd Barry has made his name in America as a superb dry, slow burn stand-up. For his latest show, however, he has turned things on their head. Crowd Work finds Barry improvising with his audience for the entire hour. No script, no rehearsals, just off the cuff riffing. And it clearly works. It has already been filmed and is available on Netflix, although, of course, what you see on his UK dates should be different to the recorded version. If you don’t know Barry’s stand-up you should know him from his sitcom appearances.
