Interview
Update 17/1/14. Hello, welcome to this interview with Josh Widdicombe. You have probably come to this webpage by googling "Josh Widdicombe Girlfriend" like everybody else. Please note that this is a very interesting piece about the tousle-haired rising star, but it sheds no light on the identity of Josh's girlfriend. Or if he even has one. Sorry. BD. And just to clarify, Josh is not Celebrity Big Brother star Ann Widdecombe's son or grandson if that's how you ended up here.
Ok, I confess. I can't always spot an embryonic superstar. I used to see Miranda Hart's shows at the Edinburgh Festival every year and while I always giggled I dismissed her performances as self-conscious, galumphing, knockabout fluff. One year I was due to review her show – a spoof chat show, I think – and it was cancelled at the last minute. An indication of either how haphazard she was or what a perfectionist she was and she didn't want to put something under par above the parapet.
Delighted to see that Greg Davies has been nominated for Best Male Performance In A Comedy Programme for his turn as hapless dad Ken in BBC3's Cuckoo. The first time I saw Greg Davies was when I judged the Evening Standard's shortlived New Comedian of the Year competition in 2002. The gig took place on the Tattershall Castle boat on the Thames and when Davies described himself as "Six foot eight inches of pure Ginsters meat pie" I'm sure I felt the boat rock with laughter.
It sometimes feels as if Paul Merton has been around for ever. But in a good way. This interview, which took place in September 2011 was my fourth encounter with the genial absurdist. The first time I interviewed him in the early 1990s was in his agent's office in Regent Street. While other "alternative comedians" had gone with cutting edge new wave management companies, Merton was handled by a company with a lengthy showbiz pedigree.
