News: Russell Brand Doth Protest

Russell Brand

Russell Brand is due to be one of the speakers at a major anti-cuts rally in Parliament Square on Saturday, June 21. This will follow a march from the BBC HQ in Portland Place.

The event is organised by The People’s Assembly, which is campaigning against austerity. There will also be speeches from Green Party MP Caroline Lucas and journalist Owen Jones. Stop the War, CND and other peace groups will form an anti-war and anti-Trident bloc on the demonstration.

Campaigners are asking for the scrapping of zero hour contracts, the introduction of a statutory living wage and a cap on private rents. They are also calling for more social housing and a publicly-owned banking system.

Brand has recently said the following on the subject: "The People's Assembly will bring down any government that doesn't end austerity. Austerity means keeping all the money among people who have loads of it. This is the biggest problem we face today, all other problems radiate from this toxic swindle. We can organise a fairer, more just society than they can, these demonstrations are the start, it will be a right laugh."

The People’s Assembly has also organised a major benefit gig, Stand Up Against Austerity, at the Eventim Apollo on July 7 featuring another Brand – Jo Brand, plus Francesca Martinez, Jason Manford, Shappi Khorsandi, Marcus Brigstocke, Robin Ince, Mark Steel, Jeremy Hardy, Stewart Lee, Jen Brister and Kate Smurthwaite.
