Book Review: Secret Kilkenny

I thought I was going to be at Kilkenny’s Sky Cat Laughs Festival this weekend, but some of the more boring bits of real life got in the way. I thought I wouldn’t be too bothered. But then I started reading Secret Kilkenny and began to grind my teeth at the thought of missing Cat Laughs 2014.

Interview: Pappy's

Hold on to your takeaway pizzas, Matthew Crosby, Ben Clark and Tom Parry return to BBC3 on June 2 for the second series of Badults, in which they play three flat-sharing, prank-playing, fun-loving mates Matthew, Ben and Tom. Live comedy fans will know the trio as Pappy's – last year they picked up a Foster's Comedy Award nomination at the Edinburgh Festival, where they have a following bordering on the fanatical. Beyond The Joke asked the trio ten questions to find out more about the new series and their future plans.

Live Review: Michael Che, Soho Theatre

I’m slightly ashamed to say this. It feels utterly politically incorrect. But the only comedian I can compare Michael Che to is Hannibal Buress. Like Buress, Che is a young, black American rising star who writes for TV and made a bit of a splash at the Edinburgh Fringe on their first UK visit. Both talk about rap and sex among other things in a laid-back, relaxed, intelligent style.

Preview: The Week Ahead May 26 - June 1

It’s a good week for thinking persons’ comedy at the Soho Theatre. From Tuesday to Sunday there is an opportunity to see the hotly-tipped Michael Che. The laid back New Yorker comes trailing a string of recommendations and positive write-ups. He has recently been named as one of Rolling Stone’s ’50 Funniest People’, Buzzfeed’s ’50 Hottest Men in Comedy’, and Variety’s ‘Top 10 Comics To Watch’.

Opinion: Saying The Wrong Thing

I was amused to hear Alison Moyet on Desert Island Discs this week saying that she put her foot in it when she met her hero Elvis Costello after one of his storming gigs. She meant to say how brilliant his epic set had been, but instead, for some reason, she engaged a different part of her brain and said “you dragged that out a bit”. According to newspaper reports, this was such a traumatic faux pas it almost made her an agoraphobic for a few years.

News: Free Tickets For Nick Helm TV Show

Tickets are now available for the studio filming of the new BBC3 TV show, Nick Helm's Heavy Entertainment. The pilot of the variety-based series, in which the star of the hit sitcom Uncle opened the show by emerging from the boot of a car, was shown last year as part of the BBC's Comedy Feeds series. Helm has also been commissioned to write his own sitcom and is making a second series of Uncle.
