Edinburgh Preview: The Women Set to Dominate The Edinburgh Fringe This Year

I got into an interesting discussion last week when I reviewed new magic show The Illusionists and pointed out that the seven magicians were all male. The producers got in touch to explain that they want to cast women but there weren’t enough high quality female illusionists available for all their worldwide shows.

Review: Brighton Comedy Garden – Alan Davies, Ed Byrne, Lolly Adefope, Suzi Ruffell & Kiri Pritchard-McLean, Preston Park, Brighton

The Brighton Comedy Garden is in its very first year, with an excellent bill of comedians from the UK's comedy scene. The question, on its inaugural night, was whether the rich pickings would come together to deliver on the such promise – and also whether it would prosper, positioned as it is the month after an arts-filled and possibly saturated Brighton Festival and Brighton Fringe.

News: UK Tour For Suzi Ruffell

Suzi Ruffell is taking her new show Dance Like Everyone's Watching on tour around the UK from October after a run at the Edinburgh Fringe.

The tour starts on October 2 at Chorley Little Theatre.

Suzi has made a name for herself by turning tragedy and anxiety into big laughs. This year she is actually happy. This show answers the question: are all stand-ups at their best when they are miserable? Fingers crossed no!

Edinburgh Fringe Review: Suzi Ruffell, Pleasance Courtyard

I always like it when comedy throws up a nice coincidence. Suzi Ruffell's latest show Nocturnal threw up two. By pure chance the day I saw it there was a row brewing over straight Jack Whitehall being cast as a reportedly gay character in Disney film The Jungle Cruise. One of the angles in Ruffell's show is about how Disney has never featured a leading gay character.

Interview: Rarely Asked Questions – Suzi Ruffell

If Suzi Ruffell isn't the next big thing she flipping well ought to be. She has become one of the star attractions on the live circuit in recent years and has supported the likes of Josh Widdicombe, Romesh Ranganathan and Alan Carr (read below about how she got too merry with Alan Carr one night) on tour. Her last show Keeping It Classy tells the story of how she moved from her working class family in Portsmouth to more middle class circles in London. It's a colourful, compelling tale told with verve and vigour.

Edinburgh Fringe Review: Suzi Ruffell, Pleasance Courtyard

At the very start of Suzi Ruffell’s set she knocked the microphone out of its stand. This was the only slip-up in an hour of excellent comedy that should win her plenty of plaudits this August.

You’ve got to have a USP in Edinburgh and Ruffell’s unique selling point is that she is a working class lesbian, not one of “your Toksvigs, yours Baldings, your Perkins.” She is not exactly like a real-life member of East Enders though. She has gone up in the world and Keeping It Classy is all about bridging that divide.
