News: BBC Comedy Playhouse Returns In Hunt For More Hits

The BBC has announced three 30-minute specials for the new Comedy Playhouse season on BBC One. One is a vehicle for Tom Binns, who plays various characters including Edinburgh favourite, Hospital DJ Ivan Brackenbury, one is co-written by Craig Cash and Phil Mealey and one stars Jack Docherty, Kerry Godliman, Nigel Havers, Laura Aikman, John Thomson and Sarah Hadland.

Before being revived last year, the Comedy Playhouse strand ran from 1961 to 1975.

Harry Hill is to reform his legendary pub band for a one-off show as a tribute to member Matt Bradstock-Smith, who has died.

News: Stephen Fry Joins Cast of Yonderland For New Series

Stephen Fry is to join the cast for the third series of Sky 1’s fantasy comedy series Yonderland, which returns to the channel in 2016. 
 
The series is created, written by and stars Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond. Filming will commence on series three this spring. 
 
Stephen Fry plays Cuddly Dick, a former Elder who returns to Yonderland having been imprisoned for years by the now-dead Imperatrix.

News: Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year Line Up

The line-up has been announced for this year's final of the Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year.

The competition takes place on February 20 at the Y Theatre as part of Dave's Leicester Comedy Festival.

News: Major Tour Extension for Romesh Ranganathan

Comedian Romesh Ranganathan has announced the autumn leg of his 2016 tour. Details here. The tour now includes a date at London's Eventim Apollo on October 7. 

In his new live show Ranganathan explores the rationality of his worldview. ‘Irrational’ will see him examine the issues close to his heart and explain why everybody else is wrong about them.

Interview: Rarely Asked Questions – Abi Roberts

In February Abi Roberts gigged at the Moscow Comedy Club. Eddie Izzard and Dylan Moran have appeared in the Russian capital, but Roberts claims to be the first English-speaking comic to gig there in Russian. Her show Anglichanka (‘Englishwoman’) is the story of her adventures in the capital during the 1990s, her love affair with the country and her overwhelming desire for Smetana and Tvorog (cottage cheese and creme fraiche).

News: More iPlayer Funny Valentines Comedy Shorts

The BBC has announced a new batch of romantic iPlayer shorts featuring talent including Suranne Jones (Dr Foster), Stephen Mangan (Episodes), Adil Ray (Citizen Khan) and Harry Hill (Harry Hill’s TV Burp).

The new shorts follow the success of BBC iPlayer’s 2015 Funny Valentines, featuring comedians including Bill Bailey, Romesh Ranganathan, Sara Pascoe, Limmy and Nick Helm, which saw 1.3m requests. Nick Helm’s short Elephant has also gone on to receive a Bafta nomination for Best Short Film.

News: Jo Brand Starts Her Sport Relief 150 Mile Walk

Jo Brand has set off on her Sport Relief trek entitled 'Jo Brand's Hell of a Walk'*. She plans to walk 150 miles across England east to west from Hull to Liverpool.

News: Philomena Cunk Joins BBC Shakespeare Line-Up

Philomena Cunk has joined the line-up of experts and academics contributing to BBC2's forthcoming month-long season marking of the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare's death. She will be fronting her own programme called Cunk on Shakespeare.
