Video: George Michael with Ricky Gervais in Extras

Lest we forget, George Michael had an excellent sense of humour. After his arrest in an LA toilet he shot the video for Outside in which a toilet turned into a glitzy disco. But the comedy appearance that springs most immediately to mind was in Extras when he brilliantly sent himself up as a dope-smoking kebab eating cruiser on Hampstead Heath. On hearing the news of George's death Ricky Gervais simply tweeted "Unbelievable.  RIP George Michael." and Stephen Merchant tweeted "RIP George Michael.

Theatre Review: The Mentalists, Wyndham's Theatre

Stephen Merchant doesn’t do things by halves. Although he has appeared in Hollywood movies and some of the sitcoms he has co-written with Ricky Gervais, he is making his West End debut playing the lead in a two-hander. The success of The Mentalists stands or falls on Merchant’s performance.

TV Review: Clear History, Sky Atlantic

I'm a bit late to the party with this one, but I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed Clear History, an HBO production that went out on Sky Atlantic last week. But then I would enjoy it. I've pretty much enjoyed every comedy Larry David has been involved in from Seinfeld to Curb Your Enthusiasm. Note to self - must hunt down his not-well-received pre-Curb debut movie Sour Grapes.

New Interview: Stephen Merchant

Stephen Merchant's new sitcom, Hello Ladies, in which he plays lonely Brit Stuart Pritchard looking for love in LA, is on Sky Atlantic on Wednesdays at 10pm from October 16. You can read more about it here. I interviewed Merchant recently for the Independent on Sunday. He was in LA having just had brunch, I was in South London with Crocodile Dundee on ITV in the background.

TV Review: Hello Ladies, Sky Atlantic

Some guys have all the luck. Two years ago I was watching Stephen Merchant do short stand-up spots in grubby London clubs bemoaning his lack of success with women. A little later he went on tour with his first full live show, Hello Ladies. He got rave reviews and ended up doing the show in America where some HBO bods saw it and asked him to turn it into a sitcom. The TV version based on the comedic stage persona starts in the UK this week.
