Review: GQ Extravaganza, Hammersmith Apollo

GQ has a long-standing reputation for being a stylish fashion magazine, but it is also building up a reputation for stylish comedy. Thanks to the contacts book and charm of its comedy editor, stand-up James Mullinger, it has put together a number of striking special editions featuring the world's greatest clowns and comedy actors from Jerry Seinfeld to Paul Rudd and Ricky Gervais. This year they went one stage further with a formidable comedy gig, which worked absolutely brilliantly. Until the headline act came on…

The Week Ahead: March 10 - 16

After a lull in proceedings the comedy circuit is back with a vengeance this week with gigs galore, starting tonight (Monday) with the first-ever GQ Comedy Extravaganza at the Hammersmith Apollo.

News: Al Murray, Pappy's & More Join Altitude Line-Up

Al Murray has been added to the line-up of this year's Altitude Festival, which takes place in Mayrhofen, Austria from March 31 - April 4. Also joining an impressive bill are Pappy's, Fred MacAuly and Rainer Hersch.

Already announced are John Bishop, Tommy Tiernan, Terry Alderton, Nina Conti, Marcus Brigstocke, Andrew Maxwell and many more. There is a notable surge in the number of women appearing this year too, with Luisa Omielan, Roisin Conaty and Zoe Lyons heading out to the Festival.

Opinion: Comedy Gets Tied Up

I was interested to read recently in David Hepworth's excellent blog that Tie Rack had recently gone into administration. Veteran music journalist Hepworth eloquently noted that these days you are more likely to see a rock star wearing a tie than a CEO.

Preview: December Comedy Guide

Even stand-up comedians have to have a bit of a holiday at Christmas, if only to count up all the royalties they've made on their DVD sales. But in the run-up to Yuletide there are still plenty of alluring live shows in December. So put on your scarves, grab your gloves and get out to the following...

News: Altitude 2014 Line-Up Announced

The Altitude Comedy Festival is returning to Mayrhofen in Austria in 2014 with a larger line-up than ever. The big draw this year is John Bishop, who has previously appeared at Altitude both as a rising star and again in 2013 as a conquering hero. Bishop will be starting his new UK tour in Autumn 2014, dates here, so this may be a chance to get a sneak preview of some of the material he will be airing in arenas in his new show.

The Week Ahead Edinburgh Special: Aug 19 - 25

For many ambitious comedians this is the most important week in comedy. The Foster's Comedy Award shortlist has just been announced and the winner will be announced on Saturday. But, believe it or not there are more important things in life than comedy.

Opinion: What's Better, New Gags or Old Classics?

I went to see Terry Alderton at the Bloomsbury Theatre last night. Great fun and a full review will be in the Evening Standard on Tuesday. But one particular thing struck me. Alderton was ostensibly doing a new show, but various bits in it came from previous shows. Not just his general multi-personality style, but actual gags and routines.

Picture Story: Altitude Festival 2013

The Altitude Comedy Festival returned to Mayrhofen in Austria last week, offering the perfect holiday for anyone who likes a combination of winter sports and gags. As ever the five-day laugh binge was a terrific opportunity to see Arena stars playing small theatres and clubs. John Bishop and Eddie Izzard both headlined Gala gigs in the relatively intimate - for them – 550-seater Europahaus, but also took the opportunity to get back to their club roots and do some smaller, intimate shows in the bars around town.
