Red Dwarf

TV: Red Dwarf XII, Skipper, Dave/UKTV Play

I've dipped in and out of this latest series of Red Dwarf but I had to make a point of watching Skipper as it features the long-awaited return of Norman Lovett as Holly the computer. Sorry if that has spoilt the surprise for you, but it has been pretty well publicised. And in fact there is another brilliant surprise comeback from the very early days which I won't reveal. But you can tell how devoted the fans in the studio audience are because his face gets a big cheer before he has even said anything.

TV Review: Red Dwarf XII, Dave

Top marks to Dave for breathing new life into Red Dwarf, which returns this week for its twelfth series. The first episode, Cured, finds our mismatched crewmates setting off in Starbug (note the old school ignition key) and meeting up with various historical tyrants – Hitler, Stalin, Messalina and Vlad The Impaler – who have been brought back to life.

News: Norman Lovett Returns To Red Dwarf

Norman Lovett is to return to Red Dwarf for the first time in 18 years.

Deadpan comedian Lovett played Holly the computer in the first two series of Red Dwarf, before Hattie Hayridge took over for series three through five. The character was then absent for the show for almost two full series, before returning - again played by Norman - at the very end of series seven and throughout the eighth.

But ever since Back to Earth, Holly has been absent from the ship until now.

It’s a big deal that sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf is back. News: Norman Lovett UK Tour Dates

Last year around the time of Ben Elton's The Wright Way there was a lot of talk in the press about whether comedians lose it in old age. One comedian who goes about his business quietly and is still as funny as ever is Norman Lovett.
