The 2023 edition of End of The Road has announced its programme of comedy and literature.
Headlining the comedy programme will be Lou Sanders, undoubtedly one of Britain's most original stand-ups, and Taskmaster champion. Lou's own brand of no-filter comedy is all about sharing, or rather oversharing the details of her daft but joyful outlook on life.
Standon Calling, the ultimate exploration of music and arts for all ages, returns for the 17th year this July with a diverse and star studded line up. Whilst the main stage is headlined by Years & Years, Self Esteem, Bloc Party and The Human League, the Comedy programme at London’s closest camping festival boasts the likes of Mark Watson, Rhys James, Reginald D. Hunter and more.
May sees the launch of London’s first ever LGBTQ+ Stand-up Comedy Festival, conceived by Comedy Bloomers, home of the LGBTQ+ New Comedian of the Year competition. The festival, which runs from May 17th to June 11th, features both established and up-and-coming talent at a selection of venues throughout the city.
London has spawned numerous enduring comedy clubs since the emergence of alternative comedy at the Comedy Store in 1979. Among them The Bearcat in Twickenham, The Bedford in Balham and my old local East Dulwich Comedy, which is sadly no longer with us. But Downstairs at the King's Head claims to be the longest-running in the same venue, having started in the basement of the Crouch End pub in 1981.
Following on from the inaugural BBC Comedy Festival in Newcastle in May 2022, Cardiff has been named the new BBC City of Comedy and will be playing host to the Comedy Festival from Wednesday 24th – Friday 26th May.
The BBC Comedy Festival is an opportunity to gather the component parts of the comedy industry together and remind the outside world that British comedy is one of our greatest cultural triumphs.
The UK’s first permanent LGBTQ+ comedy club opens its doors in Archway, London, this May.
The Queer Comedy Club will give queer audiences and their friends the chance to enjoy stand-up comedy, knowing they’ll be hearing relevant, relatable and most importantly of all, rib-ticklingly funny comedy that reflects their own lives. It will also be a safe and supportive space where queer comics can cut their comedy teeth.
The finalists have been announced for this year's WeGotTickets Musical Comedy Awards final.
After a series of hotly contested heats at the Phoenix in London the final will take place at the Bloomsbury Theatre on March 31, with a headline set from BAFTA-nominated comedian Rachel Parris (pictured). There will also be a performance from 2023 Musical Comedy Awards Best Newcomer, Jo Jo Maberly.
Host for the night will be Nick Horseman, half of 2010 MCA Runners Up, Horse & Louis.
UKTV has appointed Jason Dawson as commissioning executive to help grow the multichannel broadcaster's comedy entertainment slate. Starting today, Jason will be working to support UKTV’s comedy entertainment commissions for award-winning entertainment channel Dave as well as digital short form content and podcasts.
The finalists have been confirmed for the West End New Act of the Year. The final will take place on Wednesday, March 1st at the Albany.
Born in China, raised in Singapare, Jin Hao Li joins Comedy Store Management off the back of his arrival on the UK comedy scene. Standing out from the crowd at the Chortle Student Finals and dominating the famous King Gong competition, Jin Hao promises much.
