News: Al Porter No Longer In Panto

Irish comedian Al Porter will not be appearing in panto this Christmas.

As was hinted at in his statement yesterday, he will no longer be starring in Polly & The Beanstalk at the Olympia Theatre. A statement on the theatre's website reads:

"Due to recent developments, Al Porter is standing aside from his role in this year’s Pantomime Polly and the Beanstalk at the Olympia Theatre.

A replacement star will be announced shortly.

Pat Egan Management / Stuart O’Connor, Spotlight Productions"

In Porter's statement issued yesterday he wrote: "I am very grateful to Today FM, the Olympia Panto and TV3 for the space and time I’ve been granted to deal with the situation. I have however come to the personal decision that I need time away from the spotlight."

There has been a mixed response to Porter's statement yesterday where he wrote that he was taken aback at the scale and tone of the vitriol he had received. While fans have supported him, others have been more criticial. Conor O'Toole, who has made an allegation of sexual misconduct against Porter, tweeted: "'The tone of the vitriol.' That's amazing. My apologies to Al Porter for calmly and accurately describing my experience. Wow. Sorry I was a bad victim bud."

There was also confusion over 24-year-old Porter saying that he was taking time away from the spotlight after "decades" in the entertainment industry, which seemed a strange word to use even though he has been acting since he was a child.
