News: Matt Lucas and David Walliams Issue Statements About Little Britain

Matt Lucas and David Walliams have commented on the recent controversy over Little Britain.

David Walliams wrote on Twitter: "Matt & I have both spoken publicly in recent years of our regret that we played characters of other races. Once again we want to make it clear that it was wrong & we are very sorry."

And Matt Lucas wrote on Twitter: "David and I have both spoken publicly in recent years of our regret that we played characters of other races. Once again we want to make it clear that it was wrong and we are very sorry."

This follows old editions of BBC sketch show Little Britain being taken off BBC iPlayer, Netflix and BritBox.

The follow-up Come Fly With Me is also no longer available on Netflix.

Scenes featuring the comedians playing black characters have been viewed as particularly problematic.

Lucas has previously said: "If I could go back and do Little Britain again, I wouldn't make those jokes about transvestites. I wouldn't play black characters. Basically, I wouldn't make that show now. It would upset people. We made a more cruel kind of comedy than I'd do now."

Walliams has previously said he would "definitely do it differently" today.

Little Britain was first broadcast on TV from 2003 until 2008. There was also a recent Brexit special on Radio 4 and a sketch on the BBC One charity fundraiser The Big Night In in April, prompting speculation that the duo might collaborate again on a new sketch show.
