Interview: Rarely Asked Questions – Andy Kindler: Page 2 of 2

  • What do your parents/children (delete as applicable) think of your job?

My parents are/were proud of me. My dad passed away in 2015, which I often tell people when I want to attract sympathy. My mom still enjoys my comedy I tell her over and over.

  • What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?

Answering email Q&As. I have enough trouble committing to my act, let alone returning emails. I’m not a fan of having to do anything to further along my career.

  • I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?

I have mixed feelings about myself, which is why I’m in therapy and on Prozac. I have abandonment issues so don’t get me started.

  • How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?

I earn thousands and I would like to earn millions. I’ll settle for being out of debt.

  • How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?

You can’t count on luck but if you get lucky make sure to greedily rub your hands together and over-celebrate by engaging in trash talk with the less lucky.

  • Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into a third category?

I can’t play golf. I can engage in self-sabotage and/or self-loathing. I hate the concept of torture and wish you hadn’t brought it up.

  • Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?

Bob Dylan because of so many things. He’s a genius who believed in what he was creating regardless of what other people thought. Also Muhammad Ali because he was and remains the greatest.

  • Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not? (please think long and hard about this question, it's to settle an argument with my girlfriend. The future of our relationship could depend on your response).

I keep my drawers tidy because it keeps my mind tidy. That last sentence it a lie but I do tend to be neat and clean and OCD driven!
