Interview: Rarely Asked Questions – Andy Kindler

American stand-up Andy Kindler has not appeared in the UK for a decade, but he has not been idle. He has been seen/heard on Bob’s Burgers, Portlandia, Lady Dynamite, The Late Show with David Letterman (as a frequent correspondent) and Comedy Bang! Bang! But perhaps he is best known in comedy circles for his annual State of the Industry Address at the Montreal Just For Laughs Festival where he has been known to be bitingly critical of other comics. Expect him to be pretty critical of the USA itself in his latest show, The Ugly America Tour. The quote being used to promote these UK gigs is something I wrote a decade ago - "slick, sour and razor sharp". Check if it still valid at Soho Theatre from September 6 - 15. Buy tickets here.

  • What is the last thing you do before you go onstage (apart from check your flies and/or check your knickers aren't sticking out of your skirt and check for spinach between your teeth)?

I think about what I want to open with. And I wonder what the chances of me dying onstage are.

  • What irritates you?

Old style polyester shirts make me itch terribly which I find irritating. Otherwise Trump.

  • What is the most dangerous thing you have ever done?

Not counting hallucinogenics in college I fell off a pogo stick at the Toy Fair when I was covering it for the Letterman show. I almost broke my back and cracked my head.

  • What is the most stupid thing you have ever done?

I tried to operate a hydraulic pogo stick at the Toy Fair I was covering for the Letterman show without athletic ability. They had to check me for internal bleeding.

  • What has surprised you the most during your career in comedy?

That there have been no ups and downs. I took a rocket ship to the top of the business. And stayed there. I thank myself.
