Interview: Rarely Asked Questions – Joe Bor: Page 2 of 2

6. What do your parents/children (delete as applicable) think of your job?

I think my parents think it’s cool, when I make money out of it! My son is two, every time I leave the house he says ‘gig’. I’ve taken him on stage a few times and he was totally unfazed by it, I hope he doesn’t do it though, I could do without the competition.

7. What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?

The travel. Roadworks always seem to go on when I’m coming back from a gig and when I just want to get home and sleep.

8. I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?

I think lately I’ve started to feel more proud of what I do, I’m doing more of what I like onstage, I’m feeling more confident, taking more risks and feeling more happy about it. When I started out I didn’t know what I was doing, it has taken me 13 years, but I’m in the happiest place I’ve ever been with my comedy.

9. How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?

It varies massively from year to year. I’d like to earn a lot more!!!

10. How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?

I feel like i’m lucky to be able to do this and I’ve had a few lucky breaks. In comedy it is extremely important, doing well at the right gig at the right time is the difference between success and failure. I’d like to think I’m still waiting for my big lucky break.

11. Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into a third category?

I think I’m a bit of both, I beat myself up a lot and constantly want to do better, but I also want to enjoy life and be good company, so I try not to be a nightmare. Maybe I’m a tortured golfer.

12. Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?

Probably Barack Obama, he’s charismatic, cool, handsome, inspiring, funny…he’s got it all. I think now we realise more than ever how brilliant he truly was.

13. Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not? (please think long and hard about this question, it's to settle an argument with my girlfriend. The future of our relationship could depend on your response).

I am not tidy. I am a hoarder. I could get an award for hoarding, but I’d probably lose it!
