Review, Uncle, BBC3, Episode 4

I have a confession to make. I'd slightly gone off Uncle this time round, which is why my reviews have been running late. Watching it – previously so much fun – had started to feel like a chore and I wondered where the plot as going. But I take it all back. I was rather blown away by this latest episode.

The drama centres around Sam (Daisy Haggard) having an operation following her cancer diagnosis last week. Everyone is dealing with the issue in their own way. Errol (Elliot Speller-Gillott) has turned into an eye-linered emo/goth, Andy (Nick Helm) is having to cope with coming off mind-altering substances while hanging around a hospital where his sister Sam is being pumped full of them.

There aren't as many laughs as usual in this episode. In fact you could say that Uncle has done a Fleabag. What started as an out-and-out comedy turns into something very different this week. I won't give anything else away. Just watch and have your expectations upended. Top quality performances, top quality writing.

Oh, I'll just add one thing. Andy's I Hate Cancer song (written, presumably, by Helm) is both moving and utterly hilarious and worth the TV licence fee alone. Yes, you do need a TV licence even if you only watch the BBC on iPlayer.
