News: David Baddiel On Family, Death And Comedy

David Baddiel

David Baddiel has spoken for the first time about his new show, which will examine his complex relationship with his parents. My Family: Not The Sitcom is the follow-up to his acclaimed dissection of modern celebrity, Fame: Not The Musical.

In an interview with The Guardian today, the 50-year-old talked frankly about the sudden death of his mother last December and his 80-year-old father, who has Pick’s Disease. This is a form of dementia which, among other symptoms, can cause the sufferer to say sexually inappropriate things.

Baddiel describes the show as his most “dark and complicated” yet. He is famous for being brutally honest onstage but feels he has gone further than ever here: “It is by far the most difficult thing I’ve ever written.”

A work-in-progress run of My Family: Not The Sitcom is at Soho Theatre from June 3 - 6. Read the full Guardian interview here. David Baddiel is also on Radio 4 tonight (May 9) at 8pm talking about Franz Kafka in The Entomology of Gregor Samsa.
