The recipients of the 61st annual Rose d’Or Awards were announced today during a ceremony hosted by TV comedy star, Alex Horne.
Defining the gold standard for excellence and achievement in International TV and Audio programme making, this year’s awards recognised productions from around the world, including Succession, The Great, Casualty, Freddie Mercury: The Final Act, and podcast Pillow Talk.
The Lifetime Achievement Award, which honours a television personality for their exceptional contribution to the entertainment industry, has this year been presented to Scottish actor Brian Cox for his outstanding performance in HBO’s global hit Succession as well as his decades of TV, film and stage success.
Receiving an additional accolade, Succession also picked up the award for best Drama. Brian Cox said: “I just want to thank everyone at Rose d’Or for this wonderful, wonderful recognition of our show Succession…this is an extreme honour and thank you so much.”
The Emerging Talent Award has gone to 19-year-old British actress Yasmin Finney for her performance in the hugely popular Netflix hit, Heartstopper, about teens who discover their unlikely friendship might be something more as they navigate the complexities of school and young love.
On receiving her award, the young star thanked Rose d’Or: “It means the most to know that the roles that I play not only give representation to a community that has needed it for so long, but it’s being celebrated and rewarded, so thank you guys so much.”
Taking home the Arts award is the team behind Freddie Mercury: The Final Act – the story of Freddie Mercury’s battle with AIDS and the groundbreaking tribute concert Queen staged in his memory following his death.
Director James Rogan said: “We are so delighted with this award. We put all our heart and soul into making this film and it was such a privilege to get to tell the story of Freddie’s final act, and how Queen and musicians around the world came together to try and end the stigma around the AIDS crisis.”
Best Documentary has been awarded to BBC’s The Real Mo Farah – revealing the shocking truth about the childhood of Sir Mo Farah and the journey he made from Somaliland to the UK, leading to his incredible success at the London 2012 Olympics.
Additionally, ITV production Afghanistan: No Country for Women has won the News and Current Affairs award for its powerful exposé on the reality of life for women under Taliban rule, investigated and uncovered by British-Iranian correspondent Ramita Navai.
The Comedy award goes to Toast of Tinseltown, sequel to Toast of London about an eccentric, ageing actor played by comedy legend Matt Berry. On winning the award, he said: “Thank you very much indeed. I’m really sorry I can’t be there in person, I’m in Canada until the end of the year filming, being a vampire…Here’s to you Rose d’Or, every award means a lot to us.”
The Great has taken home the Comedy Drama and Sitcom award – a satirical black comedy loosely based on the rise to power of Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia, starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult. Producer Marian Macgowan and creator Ton McNamara expressed their gratitude: “This is fantastic, thank you very much. We’re just thrilled to receive this award, in such illustrious company.”
The Netherlands saw success this year, taking home awards in three categories. The Reality and Factual Entertainment award has gone to Dutch psychological adventure game, The Traitors, with Stop It Now winning in the Multiplatform Series category, and Talking Heads taking home the Children and Youth award.
Belgian series The Musical of Your Life receives the award for Studio Entertainment, with the Audio Entertainment award going to Australian podcast Pillow Talk, about one woman’s journey into the bizarre world of ASMR and the truth of her own past.
Danish actress Sidse Babett Knudsen has won the Rose d’Or Performance of the Year Award for her defining role in Borgen – the story of a woman who, against all odds, becomes the first female prime minister of Denmark.
