News: Doug Stanhope Cut From Wipe 2015

It has emerged that Doug Stanhope’s contribution to Charlie Brooker’s Wipe 2015 last night was cut from the broadcast.

Previews of the annual round-up promised an appearance from the controversial American comedian in the advance publicity: “Charlie is joined by brilliant guests including comedian Doug Stanhope and the ever insightful Philomena Cunk. It is basically like the Queen's speech but funnier, longer and contains adult humour.”

Opinion: Should Babies and Live Comedy Mix?

I was amused to hear that Doug Stanhope was cheesed off about a baby being in his audience at one of his European gigs recently. According to reports Stanhope wanted the infant ejected, but the parents managed to move to more discreet balcony seats and enjoy the rest of Stanhope’s show. We don’t know what their baby thought of it.

Interview: Rarely Asked Questions – Doug Stanhope

The first time I encountered Doug Stanhope he was in bed in his Edinburgh Fringe flat. I think he may have been tattooing himself at the time. The second time I encountered Stanhope he was doing a gig at the Tron pub and there was nearly a fight onstage between a disgruntled punter and Scott Capurro. Stanhope doesn't even need to be performing to produce an electrifying atmosphere.

TV Review: Charlie Brooker's Weekly Wipe, BBC2

I've got a theory that every entertainer – apart from Daniel Kitson, of course – ends up doing something very different to what they originally imagined themselves doing. Johnny Vegas ends up selling tea, Ben Elton ends up writing The Wright Way. I don't know what Charlie Brooker's original ambitions were, to be honest, but I've always felt he wanted to stand outside the establishment tent pissing in, not in it pissing out. But then what do I know about what goes on in Charlie Brooker's brain?
