TV Review, Damned, C4

Are sexual abuse and sex trafficking suitable subjects for comedy? My gut instinct would say no but the first episode of the second series of social worker comedy Damned somehow managed to incorporate these subjects and make serious points along with succesful jokes. The writers - Jo Brand, Morwenna Banks and Will Smith – and the cast – deserve full credit for going where few programmes fear to tread. Imagine Ken Loach collaborating with Ricky Gervais.

Interview: Jo Brand On The New Series Of Damned & More

Damned is back for series 2. Can you give us any hints as to what to expect?

I suppose I should say first of all that we’ve got a new character, who’s quite an annoying, know-it-all student called Mimi, who’s on work experience from her social work training. To some extent, she’s a kind of reminder to the time-servers that they’re not quite as great as they think they are. And they’re not quite as efficient, and they’re not quite as up-to-date with life as they thought they were.

Damned, Channel 4's comedy set in the world of social services starring Jo Brand and Alan Davies, is to return for a second six-part series later this year.

Created by Brand and Morwenna Banks (Miss You Already) and written by Brand, Banks and Will Smith (Veep, The Thick of It) the second series returns to Elm Heath Social Services where much has changed… but quite a lot hasn’t.
