Brighton Fringe Review: Lady Bolognese: Class War

When chills go up your spine at a Lady Bolognese show there are a number of reasons for them. They’re all good, in my book. Compulsive by way of menace-eliciting-childish-delight sets the tone for the hour. The pair shuffle in with faces hidden behind a black A4 ring binder, huddled together conspiratorially with only hair nets and kitchen smocks showing.

Likeable from the off, Kohli starts gag-rapid, quickly establishing a lovely audience rapport. Making note that the show falls on both VE Day and the day the mass local election results come out, he taps into an immediacy vibe naturally and easily.

On the opening night of the second Brighton Dome Comedy Festival Rob Newman is in a pseudo forest, five green lights striking up high towards the rafters, giving the impression of a woodland that could feasibly be populated by numerous grandmothers’ cottages. An appropriate setting for the wild tales about to spring forth, but these ones have their roots in Nietzsche, Sartre and Pythagoras, not Grimm – and somehow manage to keep all of their wonder.
