Comedian Angela Barnes has landed her first Radio 4 series commission. Based on her critically acclaimed debut show at the Edinburgh Fringe 2014, "You Can't Take It With You", Angela shares the big stuff she's thinking about: life, love, family, work and death.
It is easy to talk about all the acts who won awards at the Edinburgh Festival and went on to great things, but there are also the acts that got away. Acts that the Comedy Awards judges inexplicably overlooked. Most famously there was Michael McIntyre, who only scraped a Best Newcomer nomination.
Just before the Edinburgh Festival I wrote that Angela Barnes is the best mainstream female comedian I’ve seen since Sarah Millican. She had a great Edinburgh and I was surprised that she didn't figure in the Foster's Awards shortlists. It doesn't really matter though, she is clearly going to make it big. She has gradually been building up an impressive following wind since winning the BBC New Comedy Award in 2011.
You can’t please everyone. That’s the conclusion I come to almost every year when the Foster’s Award nominations are announced. This year's shortlist is no exception. Despite choosing seven of the best acts in Edinburgh there are a number of unfortunate omissions. I should imagine that everybody who has taken the trouble to read this far has got one favourite that the panel missed.
To quote jokes or not to quote jokes, that is the perennial question for comedy critics. This has particularly been bothering me in the last couple of days after I ran a rave review of Bec Hill and she complained that I had printed one of her jokes, thus ruining the surprise for fans. While I could understand her point this was just one joke in a set packed with neat little quips and puns. It would hardly have disgruntled punters queueing around the block for refunds.
