In episode three of Mock The Week: Summer Specials, host Dara Ó Briain and series regular Rhys James are joined by Glenn Moore, Maisie Adam, Chris Ramsey, Sarah Keyworth and Ed Byrne, with the teams enjoying a satirical romp through some of the week’s biggest headlines, including FIFA’s introduction of hydration breaks and ‘Ref Cam’, as the first week of the World Cup hits its stride.
Maisie Adam on the World Cup’s introduction of hydration breaks: “Oh hydration breaks, that are definitely not for the adverts…”. “No not in any way … It’s player welfare ... how dare you even suggest?”
“They use language like ‘they need to take on water’, like that scene in Free Willy where they have to keep hosing him down. Harry Kane just there like ‘oahhh’,” Maisie Adam jokes.
Ó Briain adds. “The other technological advance is ‘Ref Cam’, in which there’s a replay shown, directly from the ref’s head as it swivels around… giving motion sickness to everyone…”
The teams also find time to take a look at the England team’s World Cup publicity shots, with Anthony Gordon’s in particular drawing focus. “Do you mind if I? Sorry….” says Glenn Moore, as he takes a picture on his phone of Gordon’s publicity shot. “My barber never knows what I mean when I ask for the ‘lesbian nana’.” “It does look like the photo you’d put on the front of an order of service for an auntie’s funeral,” Rhys James notes.
“It does look like Princess Diana if she was two years on testosterone,” Sarah Keyworth adds. “‘Non-Di-nary” Glenn Moore quips.
“It’s a different kind of awkward to Reece James,” Ó Briain says, introducing a new picture of England defender Reece James. “He looks like he’s in table football… I’m expecting him to do a backflip with his arms by his side,” Glenn Moore jokes.
Later in the episode, the panel discuss the UFC match that took place at the White House, as a celebration for President Trump’s 80th birthday and America’s 250th birthday. “They got takeaway food at the party, didn’t they? … from MAGAwamas …” Maisie Adam joked. “Then they all went on holiday … to MAGAluf!” Adam continued. “What did they watch on the plane there Dara, I hear you ask? MAGAdascar … I’m on tour in September …”.
Also in episode three, the under-16 social media ban, the Makerfield by-election and Elon Musk’s trillionaire status.
