Interview with Kyla Harris, who plays Freya and co-created We Might Regret This.

How did it feel when We Might Regret This was recommissioned?

Lee and I were so excited that the series was recommissioned. It shows a huge vote of confidence from the BBC and hopefully all of the viewers.

What can audiences expect from this series?

Bigger laughs, backstory and more nipples. Sophie Thompson joins the cast for this series.

Can you tell us a little about her character and what she brings to the show?

Sophie is heaven on earth to spend time with and she may actually be a legit angel. Her character is an eccentric, intuitive wedding dress designer whose insights make Freya question her life choices. She brings so much to the show - wit, warmth and grounding to a character that is so much fun to see Sophie portray.

How is Freya feeling about marrying Abe? Does she have any hesitations?

Although excited to marry Abe, Freya is hesitant to get married without her best friend, Jo. She also receives unexpected news about how her decision to get married will affect her autonomy which completely complicates her engagement to Abe. Freya seems to be grappling with questions of dependency in this series.

Can you tell us more about that, and why it felt important to explore?

As Freya and Abe are getting ready to be married, Freya discovers that marriage would significantly reduce the benefits she relies on to fund her personal care - a reality built into welfare systems that many disabled people face. There’s the conception that there’s marriage equality for everyone but that’s just not the case. We also used this topic as a way to put more dildos on screen. You'll have to watch to find out how.

The show hilariously skewers influencer culture, particularly around diversity. What are your thoughts on that world, and why did you want to make it a key theme?

I personally engage with influencer culture only as a consumer, but I’m fascinated by the fine line between self-empowerment and unconscious self-exploitation on social media. It’s such a rich area to explore. We’re especially interested in how corporations have learned that “diversity” can expand audiences and therefore increase profits, but the opportunities they offer often still present diverse eople from underrepresented groups in narrow or limiting ways. Many of these “opportunities,” particularly for disabled people, didn’t even exist ten years ago.
