OK, let’s get this party started. Meet Barry Morgan, bouffant-haired organ salesperson who has come direct from his store in Adelaide's Sunnyside Mall to persuade you to invest in one of his organs. The result is a laughalong, singalong spectacular that by the end will either have you staring into the existential abyss and fleeing into the street in horror or cheering on his call and response catchphrase: “When I say Morgan you say – Organ”.
Morgan, the creation of Australian musician and comedian Stephen Teakle, certainly has an eye-catching look. Bee Gee hair, cheesy grin and shiny gold safari suit. And the patter to go with it, as he quickly warms up the crowd while fingering his keyboard. It’s camp, though not quite as camp as another Aussie purveyor of smutty puns and safari suits, Bob Downe. He's definitely more Liberace than John Shuttleworth. More loungecore than hardcore.
There is maybe not a lot going on here beyond the cartoonish character and the bossa nova beats but somehow it quickly hits the right note. After an early audience walkabout which had my sphincter promptly retracting into my body he quickly he had the uncanny ability to get everyone joining in with his jaunty numbers. Some happily went up onstage towards the end after being tutored in his trademark ‘one finger method’.
I’ve heard it said that there are two sides to Edinburgh, reflected in the contrast of the New Town and the Old Town. Some say this split personality is what inspired Robert Louis Stevenson to write Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. And there is a split personality to the Edinburgh Fringe too. You can opt for cerebral shows about trauma and mental health, or you can plunge into a show like Barry Morgan's, forget your troubles and just have unadulterated fun.
I’d have liked a little bit more back story about this slightly scary salesman along with the innuendo, but the emphasis here is very much on creating joy in the room in ther moment. The tunes are catchy, the vibe is positive and, make no mistake about it, he clearly has an impressive organ.
Until August 24. Tickets here.
