Romesh Ranganathan Talks About Crying During An Early Job And Wearing Speedos

Romesh Ranganathan has revealed how he hated one of his first jobs so much he used to cry and also that he would never get his eye fixed.

He was talking to Katherine Ryan on her new podcast, What’s My Age Again?.

What’s My Age Again? is available at the usual podcast outlets

Ranganathan told Ryan: "I was working as a cost analyst for an airline caterer. Basically, it's a really boring job to describe.  And I was paid a decent wage to do that job. But one day I was sat doing it and I was like, I'm just going to go pop to the toilet. And then when I went to the toilet, I sat in the cubicle, and I started crying just spontaneously because I became quite sad that this was going to be my life. I just thought, this is the most of my life now, is doing stuff like this. And I found that quite depressing.

But then when I got back to my desk, I felt better. I actually felt like, refreshed. And I'd press the reset button. So, then I would do that every few weeks. So, every now and again I'd be like, sat at work and I think, oh, I'm feeling a bit… I'm gonna go and have a toilet cry now."

Ryan and Ranganathan talked a lot about body image and he recalled filming a show about trying to crack the USA: "America is a lot more image obsessed than we are in the UK. And so, one of the things I had to do is I had to have a health test. And one of the health tests was I put on a pair of Speedos. It could be any brand of swimming trunks. And then they put me in a fry basket and they dropped me into this water tank and they analyzed all of my body and, like, my body fat and stuff like that. Like I was about 3, 4 stone heavier than I am now.

First of all, I didn't look great in the swim shorts. That's immediately funny. And then they dropped me in the fry basket. And it's going to be really funny how that guy told me how unhealthy I was. That was the premise. But then after we did that and we did the stuff on camera, the director, Ben Green, he said to me, Romesh, the guy would like to have a word with you off camera.  So, then he took me to one side and he said, I'm really worried that you're gonna die.

And he said, all of your readings are really bad. He said, your body fat is out of control. All these levels are really bad. He said, you are going to have a premature death. It was a really horrible conversation, obviously. Anyway, the point is, it was really stern and solemn, and he was like. He said the words to me, you are going to die. Which is true regardless, isn't it? But the way he said it was like, you're gonna die soon, that was the implication."

As for his eye, he added: "It's been put to me on a number of occasions that I could have my eye corrected. And I don't think I would ever do that. I think part of the reason I would never do that is I don't think I would have been a comedian if my eye wasn't like this."
