News: Spitting Image Defends Greta Thunberg Puppet

People involved in the new series of Spitting Image have hit back after being criticised for the show's puppet version of campaigner Greta Thunberg.

When the image appeared on social media some said that Thunberg was not fair game because of her age and her autism.

ITV's Group Director of streaming video on demand Reemah Sakaan said the Swedish teenager would appear on the revived satirical series to mention rising temperatures on the planet.

"It’s a very straightforward joke and is nothing to do with her as an individual,” said Sakaan following criticism that the programme would be making fun of a teenager with autism.

Spitting Image creator Roger Law has said that the programme will not just be Tory-bashing and will attack targets from all sides of the political spectrum. “There’s lots of ammunition to throw at the other side as well. You go for them all.”

There will also be puppets of Boris Johnson, Michael Gove, Dominic Raab and Priti Patel, alongside others including Donald Trump, Joe Biden, Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, RuPaul, Adele, Elon Musk, Beyonce and James Corden. Piers Morgan's puppet was unveiled on Good Morning Britain, the programme he co-anchors.

Spitting Image is available on Britbox from Saturday, October 3.
