Interview: Chelsea Handler: Page 2 of 2

Chelsea Handler

But you have become bored with interviewing pop stars and reality TV personalities.

CH: I am sick of interviewing so many celebrities. Some are fascinating but most aren’t.  Some of them have things to say that may be interesting to other people but they are not interesting to me. A key component for having a television show is for you to be interested because then your viewers are interested. The minute I’m not interested it’s not interesting to anyone that is watching...

Which brings us to Piers Morgan. When you were a guest on his CNN show in March you attacked him on air for Tweeting during the ad break. You called him “a terrible interviewer”. Was it all a publicity stunt?

CH: Piers Morgan? Is he still alive? Nothing I ever do is planned or calculated. He was annoying me that day so I decided to tell him. He annoys me most of the time and I always tell him, that time just happened to be on air.

You are pretty fearless though. Maybe you could take over his CNN slot?

CH: I’m not really scared of people. I have no problems asking people anything. i don’t want to focus solely on politics but it is definitely something i want to delve into. I don’t want to be fluffy. I want people to be brave enough to sit there and answer any questions. I’ll sit there and answer any questions anyone asks me. I think anyone in the public eye should be prepared to do the same thing, especially if you are running for office. Everyone has responsibility when you are in the public eye, if you want to keep your private life private keep it private. There is nothing more annoying than people coming on your show and they don’t want to talk about his or they don’t want to talk about that. If you agree to do an interview you should be interviewed.

There aren’t that many women in stand-up on hosting talk shows and you have done both. The most successful is probably Joan Rivers. Is she a role model?

CH: Comedy is more of a sport for men, men are more drawn to the lifestyle, it is not a thing that women want to get into. There are definite gains and momentum for women, but it took a lot of time. It’s like women being in the army. It’s combat. You stay in awful hotels, you are not making any money, you are basically working in front of 10-15 people. Talk shows are male dominated, but you know what? A lot of things have been male-dominated. Joan Rivers is not a role model. Just because she is a comedian and a woman doesn’t mean she is a role model. Jane Fonda is a role model. I’m sure she could have had a talk show if she’d wanted one.

You turned down posing nude for Playboy?

CH: I don’t think any one of my brothers needs to see my vagina. I don’t mind nudity but I don’t really need to have my vagina in a magazine.
