News: Radio Show Tells Story Of Room Next Door Man Michael Spicer

Radio 4 is to broadcast a programme telling the story of viral sensation Michael Spicer, better known as the Room Next Door Man, the comic creation who tries to advise public figures what to say with varying degrees of success.

Michael Spicer: Before Next Door will air on Radio 4 on Thursday 18 June at 11pm and tells the story of what happens when a socially awkward and neurotic part-time comedian becomes a global internet sensation.

It charts Michael's real-life progress, sort of, as his Room Next Door videos amass tens of millions of views online and win him acclaim for his comedy, at last. But how will Michael cope? Will this married, father of two ever be able to quit his day job as a copywriter for a kitchen worktop company? And why is the broadcaster Peter Curran in his house?

After twenty years of producing comedy under the radar, Michael is now on the cusp of leaving the office behind and - with the help of his wife Roberta - making a career out of being funny. However, the road to fame for an ordinary person like Michael is a frightening one with sharp corners and hairy bends, like the dual carriageway on the A90 between Stonehaven and Aberdeen, for example.

Featuring Michael Spicer with Ellie Taylor, Peter Curran and Joanna Neary.

The Room Next Door Man also appears on this new TV show.

Radio 4 has also announced another new comedy. Tudur Owen: Zoo airs on Wednesday 17 June at 6.30pm and is a follow up to Welsh comic Owen's Where on Earth is Anglesey? This programme tells the incredible but true story of how Owen and his family somewhat unwittingly became the owners of what the News of the World would go on to describe as “The Worst Zoo in Britain”.
