News: Union Jack Radio Announces Leicester Comedy Festival Coverage

News: More Comedy Companies Receives Lifeline Grants

Union JACK Radio has announced its full line-up of Leicester Comedy Festival coverage. The festival sponsor will be broadcasting events to make them available for people who can't get to the gigs.

The live broadcasts on Union JACK Radio – recently shortlisted for National Radio Station of the Year just three years since launching – will include the world-renowned Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year competition (Saturday 22 February, 7.30pm – 10pm), which features a stellar list of past winners such as Josh Widdicombe, Johnny Vegas, Jason Manford and Rhod Gilbert. Not only will Union JACK Radio be the only place to hear this hilarious competition outside of the event, but it has also enlisted the witty and charismatic skills of comedian and actor Tom Rosenthal, who will be hosting the show alongside much-loved broadcaster Geoff Lloyd, who will inevitably be adding their own twist to the running order.

Union JACK Radio’s live broadcast of the UK Pun Championships (Monday 10 February, 7pm – 10pm) will be hosted by award-winning comedy presenter Lucy Leeds, alongside 2018 Pun Championship winner Rob Thomas, so expect to hear much hilarity from this duo. Lucy Leeds will also host her own festival-themed show, Lucy Leeds Loose in Leicester (nightly Wednesday 5 to Friday 7 February, 6pm – 7pm), which will see hapless Lucy getting to grips with all that the festival has to offer, guided by her exasperated and entertaining co-host, comedian Alex Hylton. The climax of the series will see Lucy attempting her own stand-up show, so listeners will have to tune in to judge her performance for themselves.

Union JACK Radio will also be taking its popular live breakfast show The Full English to Leicester Comedy Festival, where it will broadcast live from the venue daily from 7am – 9am, Wednesday 5 to Friday 7 February. The show will include news and happenings from the festival, together with interviews from some of the attending comedians such as Patrick Monahan and Scott Bennett. Finally, listeners can also hear some of the nation’s greatest emerging talent live on Union JACK Radio, through the broadcast of Union JACK Radio’s Circuit Breakers (Saturday 15 February, 8.30pm – 10pm) which will shine a light on performances from some of the comedy stars of the future, all under the brilliant host Mark Dolan.

Giles Gear, Programme Manager at Union JACK Radio, said: “There are huge numbers of comedy fans out there who won’t be able to make it to Leicester Comedy Festival in person, so we want to take the very best highlights of the event to them. Union JACK Radio is delivering a brilliant schedule of live events, interviews and one-off programmes from the festival, so listeners up and down the country don’t have to miss out.”

Union JACK Radio has quickly cemented its reputation as the ‘Home of Great British Comedy on the Radio’ with a sustained investment and a strategic focus on British comedy, playing clips of classic comedy and investing in up-and-coming talent and formats, whilst also extending the reach of some of the nation’s most-loved comedy events, including Leicester Comedy Festival and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Union JACK is available across the UK on digital radio, online at unionjack.co.uk and via the Union JACK app.
