News: Performer Luke Nowell Dies

It has been reported in Australia that performer Luke Nowell has died.

Impro Australia posted the news on their Facebook page, as follows:

"It is with great sadness and a sense of disbelief that we acknowledge the passing of a friend and fellow improviser.

Luke Nowell was cherished member of the impro and comedy festival community. It was always a delight to share the stage with him.

Luke was genuine artist. Trained in clowning by some of the European masters, he created his own solo shows that had audiences mesmerised. A gentle beautiful soul with a rare ability to embody whimsy, release emotions in others seemingly at will and transform himself into wonderful rich characters that could communicate effortlessly without the need for words.

I recall Marko Mustac urging me to come and see Luke's one-person Sydney Comedy Festival show. I don't think I had ever heard Marko, a discerning theatregoer, gush at having been so moved and impressed by a new act. Luke's clever, distilled performance was magical.

Luke struck me as natural improviser, a generous humble teacher and a kind funny person loved by the comedy community. I'm sure we were all looking forward to watching and cheering as his perfoming star ascended.

We have been in contact with Luke's sister Rachel and feel she would be happy for us to share her thoughts with the impro community.

"Thank you so much for reaching out. We’ve been so incredibly moved by the words coming through from the comedy and improv community. I wish Luke could hear all these amazing things being said about him. We knew he was amazing but it seems everyone else did too. Improv introduced Luke into a world where he felt belonged. It allowed him the courage to pursue his comedy. What he was born to do. I’ll be forever grateful for that.
Rachel"

Our heartfelt feelings are with his family, friends and fans - those he made laugh and cry and squeal with delight through the indelible impressions that his performances have left.

We will post the details of Luke's funeral when they are finalised.

Nowell was from Sydney and trained at Ecole Philippe Gaulier in France for two years. He appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2016 with his show The Weaning of Life and then again in 2017 with his show Being Hueman.
