Interview: Rarely Asked Questions – Rachel Fairburn: Page 2 of 2

6. What do your parents/children (delete as applicable) think of your job?

I don’t have kids but my nieces who are 7 and 11 are massively underwhelmed by my job. “If you go on stage then why aren’t you famous? Why don’t you have lots of money aunty Rachel?” I think they’d be more impressed if I was a YouTuber

My parents are very supportive though. In fact, if it wasn’t for my mum I wouldn’t be doing stand up. She encouraged me to start gigging.

7. What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?

The travel. I’m constantly on trains, buses or in car shares with other comics.  Car shares can either be fun or make you want to never see that person ever again. I once had a 12 hour round trip with someone who I would have happily smothered within the first hour. I like staying in hotels though. I still have this weird idea that it’s glamorous even when it’s some utter shit hole in Newport. I say that from experience. I had to walk through a packed dance floor to get to my room.

8. I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?

I think I’m good at my job and I’m hard working and creative. I’m also paranoid and riddled with self doubt and think I don’t deserve the work I get and will be marched out of the comedy scene at any moment. I think a lot of comedians feel like that.

9. How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?

I earn enough to be comfortable and have a Nando’s whenever I want. I’d like to earn 89 million pounds a year after tax.

10. How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?

Luck is important but I haven’t had any lucky breaks as yet. Fingers crossed! I’m a believer in hard graft though. Put the work in, enjoy the journey and dream of that 89 million a year.

11. Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into a third category?

Probably somewhere in the middle. I’m riddled with self doubt and paranoia but also I love what I do and wouldn’t want to do anything else. I have a life outside comedy too which is important. Those mates that aren’t bothered about stand up and just want to go to the pub and have a laugh without shouting over you are very important.

12. Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?

I’m a lifelong Oasis fan. It’s an obsession for me so I’ll have to say Liam and Noel Gallagher. Don’t make me choose between them.

13. Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not? (please think long and hard about this question, it's to settle an argument with my girlfriend. The future of our relationship could depend on your response).

Absolutely not. What’s the point? Nobody will see what’s in them. As long as you know what’s in them, that’s all that counts.
