Review: This Country, Episode 6, Family Loyalties, BBC Three

After a successful first series, the second series of This Country has kept up the momentum and high quality level with six more glorious episodes. After last week's classic when Kerry failed to make it to the steam fair the series closes with an episode that has everything. Comedy, poignancy and dodgy Dyson hoovers.

It finally looked as if Kerry's disinterested father Martin Mucklowe (Paul Cooper) was paying her some attention. She thought she was working with him, all she was doing was keeping some stolen Dysons in her lock-up – and anywhere else she could find to store them. It was excruciatingly painful watching her hopes rise that things were going to be OK with her dad at last.

Meanwhile her Lynx-loving, TK Maxx-fixated cousin Kurtan had landed a job at the local bowls club and, while he had his doubts about it at first, it did give him some focus. Not that he is going to be picking up any employee of the montha awards, unless he is the only employee. There is really not much pointing shouting out "has anyone lost their hearing aid?" if the only other person in the room is deaf.

The episode is full of great writing and great acting from the creators/stars, real-life siblings Daisy May Cooper and Charlie Cooper. Of the two fictional cousins that they play Kurtan is maybe marginally brighter and is genuinely concerned for Kerry (remember him faking the birthday card from her dad last week?). Loyalty is very important for the Mucklowes, says Kurtan, and Kerry is very loyal. The trouble, is, he adds, she is also very stupid.

And sure enough it ends in tears when the police check out her lock-up. No third series has been announced yet but there has to be a follow-up. If only for us to watch the progress of a "Free The Mucklowe One" campaign.
