News: Adam Kay, Robert Webb, Russell Brand Up For Book Awards

Adam Kay's account of his time as a hospital doctor has been nominated in the Best Non-Fiction: Narrative category in the British Book Awards shortlist.

This is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor has already been a best seller and is due to be published in paperback in April.

Elsewhere How To Be A Boy by Robert Webb is nominated in the audiobook category. And Russell Brand's Recovery: Freedom From Our Addictions is shortlisted in the Non-Fiction: Lifestyle category.

Kay recently spoke to Richard Herring about his book on Herring's podcast. He suggested that now that he has a bit of clout following the success of the original book he may be able to persuade the publishers to include some more gruesome anecdotes in the paperback edition. One story was about having to remove a wedding ring placed inside a Kinder egg and then put in a vagina where it got stuck, putting, joked Kay, a whole new spin on saying "I put the Christmas lights up myself."

He also told Herring that he had met Health Minister Jeremy Hunt, who had asked for a meeting. The book is critical of the government's stance on the NHS and apparently people have been sending copies of the book to Hunt (which might partly explain why it is a best seller...). The encounter was not a great success. Kay said that Hunt said he had been expecting a chat rather than an interrogation and joked that maybe Hunt only had the meeting in the hope that people would stop sending him copies of the book.
