Interview – Rarely Asked Questions – James Meehan: Page 2 of 2

6. What do your parents/children (delete as applicable) think of your job?

My parents are endlessly supportive and mildly disappointed that I’m not a doctor or lawyer. I think my dad thought I’d be a footballer for about a week after I scored from a corner in a cubs football match when I was 9. I don’t have any kids yet, being an ex-teacher has put me off for the time being.

7. What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?

Travelling to gigs, or the admin. From the outside this job can look glamorous, but audiences don’t see the daily writing/gig applications or the getting home at 3am after four hours travel.

8. I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?

I think I’ve still got a lot to learn. Maybe I think that I’m a bit of a jack of all trades? I do stand-up, sketch, kids shows, I’ve written for TV and radio, acted in a few things, taught comedy at degree level and last year directed my first show: The Delightful Sausage – Cold Hard Cache. If you’ve not heard of The Delightful Sausage you should check them out, the show ended up getting rave reviews and they’re going to be huge.

9. How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?

I earn enough to make a living. I’d like to earn enough so that I don’t have to think or worry about money. I’m a council estate lad from Lancashire though, I’ll make do whatever the weather.

10. How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?

Luck plays a massive part in terms of success. I’ve had lots of lucky breaks, but you can never underestimate the power of hard work.

11. Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories -golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into a third category?

I’d love to be the tortured artist type. I don’t think I am though. Maybe I’m a little of the two? Certainly if you read my answer to question 3

12. Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?

I’m cheating a bit here as he was a friend, a man called Matthew James Cogley. He was a fantastic musician from my home town who sadly passed away a few years ago. Since then he has inspired a whole movement called ‘We Are Hummingbird’’ that helps to support artists worldwide that are suffering from mental health issues. He’s brought family, friends and strangers closer together via a love of music. His music is on Spotify but here’s a video… https://youtu.be/2-hfTgaM_lE

13. Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not? (please think long and hard about this question, it's to settle an argument with my girlfriend. The future of our relationship could depend on your response).

It depends on the drawer doesn’t it? I’ve a drawer full of folded T-shirts but I’m not going to fold the carrier bags in that drawer in the kitchen.
