News: Goodnight Sweetheart To Return

Goodnight Sweetheart, the 1990s sitcom which ran for six series on BBC One starring Nicholas Lyndhurst (Only Fools and Horses, New Tricks) is returning for a one-off special episode as part of the landmark sitcom season.

It has been 17 years since Nicholas Lyndhurst played the character of Gary Sparrow, a former TV repairman and accidental time traveller who leads an extraordinary double life. Now the original creators Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran (Birds of a Feather, The New Statesman) have written a new script which sees Gary Sparrow face the consequences of his time travel and go somewhere he’s never been before, as Goodnight Sweetheart is about to be catapulted into the 21st century.

Marks and Gran said, “Gary has been trying for the last 17 years to find a way back to the present. Now he’s found one, and he’s asked us to turn it into a TV show, featuring much-loved old Goodnight Sweetheart friends and one or two new ones.”

Goodnight Sweetheart will be part of the BBC’s landmark sitcom season celebrating the heritage and legacy of BBC comedy over the past 60 years. The season which airs in the autumn will be revisiting some of Britain’s iconic sitcoms including Are You Being Served?, Porridge and Young Hyacinth, a prequel to Keeping Up Appearances alongside launching brand new comedy shows including Motherland and Home from Home.

Further casting for Goodnight Sweetheart is to be announced.
