Interview: Rarely Asked Questions – Todd Barry

Todd Barry has made his name in America as a superb dry, slow burn stand-up. For his latest show, however, he has turned things on their head. Crowd Work finds Barry improvising with his audience for the entire hour. No script, no rehearsals, just off the cuff riffing. And it clearly works. It has already been filmed and is available on Netflix, although, of course, what you see on his UK dates should be different to the recorded version. If you don’t know Barry’s stand-up you should know him from his sitcom appearances. He is a friend of Louis CK and has appeared in Louie, but maybe most famously of all, he was the power-crazed bongo player in Flight of the Conchords’ TV show. Two words. Doggy Bounce.

Todd Barry is at the Pub/Zoo Manchester on June 13, tickets here and Soho Theatre from June 14 - 18. Tickets here.

1. What is the last thing you do before you go onstage (apart from check your flies and/or check your knickers aren't sticking out of your skirt and check for spinach between your teeth)?

I like to write a five-figure check to a local charity right before I go on stage. If the show goes well I head straight to the post office to mail it.

2. What irritates you?

People who chew loudly. Do you chew loudly, Bruce?

3. What is the most dangerous thing you have ever done?

That thing  I did with the poisonous snakes and the lions.

4. What is the most stupid thing you have ever done?

I feel like “agree to this interview” is the number one answer you get for this one!

5. What has surprised you the most during your career in comedy?

Well, occasionally I don’t get a standing ovation. That’s always a head scratcher!
