News: Eddie Izzard Finishes His 27 Marathons for Sport Relief

Eddie Izzard has succeeded in running 27 marathons in 27 days in South Africa.

He completed the challenge by running two marathons in the same day and has raised over £1 million for charity.

This was the second time he attempted this goal and was determined to be successful it this time, which meant running a total of more than 700 miles in temperatures of up to 30c. He finished his final run beneath a giant statue of Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg.

He chose to run 27 marathons because that was the number of years Nelson Mandela spent in prison. At the start he said: "Of course, 27 marathons in 27 days is nothing compared to what Nelson Mandela did by serving 27 years in prison. He was a great soul and leaves a fantastic legacy for the world."
