Live Review: Nath Valvo, Soho Theatre

This review first appeared in the Evening Standard here

A woman stormed out of Nath Valvo’s Friday show within a minute when he described Soho as “Hogwarts for the gays”. The rest of the enjoyably filthy Grindr: A Love Story? would not have won her over. As the star, right, quipped: “Did she think it was about my quest for the perfect cup of coffee?”

The show is about Valvo’s experiences of gay dating app Grindr and the boyish Australian clearly struck a chord with his remaining audience. After asking who used it a sea of hands shot up. To illustrate how cruiser-friendly the app is he fixed up a fan with a date mid-set. How’s that for multitasking?

There were further nods of recognition during a list of the giveaway signs of app addiction, such as vowing to quit then logging on a minute later, or getting an endorphin rush when the app buzzes. Our guide wistfully recalled living near a gay club and his phone going into a veritable vibro-frenzy at closing time.

This is not particularly deep or the first humorous look at sex and the internet. Playwright Tim Fountain caused a kerfuffle way back in 2004 with his piece Sex Addict long before Grindr came along. But Valvo is engagingly candid, taking the assembled into a world of quickies and kinks. Smutty fun for the broadminded.
